We have enjoyed learning all about the 7 continents. We dived into some great books from the school library to help us learn more about each continent. We also watched a few United Streaming videos to help us "see" the continents we were studying. We completed group projects to present to our class. Check out our work below!

Smiley Similes
We have been working on figurative language and decided to create fun smiley face similes. We thought that smiley and simile look very similar so it would help remind us of what similes are. We came up with some great ones to display in our classroom! :) Enjoy!

Lexington Mayor Visit
We had a great afternoon on Friday! The Mayor of Lexington came to visit us at school to speak to us about our community, what he does as the leader of our town, and he taught us some very important lessons about always trying our best. We really enjoyed our time with him! The best thing was, he is Mrs. HB's dad! We look forward to having him come back to visit us again soon!

Compliment Plate Party
We earned a Compliment Party last week for filling up our marble jar! We were so excited! To go along with our treat from Mrs. HB, we filled up plates with compliments for each other. We really enjoyed working together and receiving wonderful compliments from our classmates! Check out the pictures below of our fun!

1. First, you need a paper plate, a marker, and some good thoughts about a person. 2. Write compliments on their plate. When it is full, give it to them with a big smile! :)

Check Out Our Busy Hive!
We are continually working hard in the second grade! We have made so many accomplishments and improvements in all areas it is incredible! Lately, we have concentrated on reading comprehension strategies. Mrs. HB used the stories of Epossumondas to help illustrate how to make text to text and text to self connections. We really enjoyed learning about this crazy character by Colleen Salley! Check out the graph we made to show our favorite Epossumondus book!

We also are learning about how to be drug free during Red Ribbon Week at PHES. We are having a door decorating contest. Check out our fabulous door!

September/October Fun!
The HBees have had a blast learning during the past few weeks! We wanted to share some great pictures of ourselves to show everyone what an awesome job we are doing working on reading and math! Check out the pictures below! Enjoy! :)

Today, we had a great and fun author come visit our school! He made us laugh and squirm this morning during his presentation. We learned about how many drafts he writes (25-30!) and that it takes him 2-3 years to publish a book! We also learned some fantastic facts about different animals such as slugs, vampire bats, giant squids, and more! We were fortunate enough to run into Mr. Anthony Fredericks during our library time this afternoon! We took a picture with him to remember what a great day we had with him! He writes many teacher books and nonfiction children's books. His most recent book is A is for Anaconda. Check out some of his books the next time you are at the library or bookstore!

The Beehive is a Busy Place to be!
We have had a great first couple of weeks in second grade! We have been so busy working hard that we have left our blog in the dust. We hope to continue to update it weekly as much as possible. Here are a few things we have been working on in the last few weeks:
-Introducing ourselves to our new math series, Everyday Mathematics
-Playing Number line Squeeze at school and at home
-Learning to play Addition Top-It
-Learning Spelling and Vocabulary Words
-Memorizing our Phonics Chant to help with our reading and writing.
-Learning about nouns and verbs. (A fun thing to do is count how many nouns and verbs we have in each one of our weekly post! What a great activity to do at home to strengthen your child's skills!)
-Learned about our community and our neighborhoods.
-We just started learning about weather and we will work on this unit until October. We will work on many hands-on activities and make fun weather instruments!
We are looking forward to the many things ahead of us this year! We will keep you updated as much as possible about what we are doing inside our classroom! Thank you for checking out the "beehive!"

First Day Jitters!
Wow! What a fantastic first day the HBees had today! We enjoyed touring our classroom and our school. We read the book First Day Jitters and wrote our own class book about first day jitters. We were introduced to Rocky the Cougar who will be traveling home with students every weekend. We also organized our supplies and went over our rules and procedures. The HBees are already off to a great start! I am looking forward to the rest of our year together! You can check out our classroom in the pictures below. :)
